Summary

Mount Vernon City Library is recruiting enthusiastic and motivated individuals who are excited about working for a vibrant and thriving City and Library. We are currently looking for a a Librarian to help with day-to-day operations on a full-time basis. Librarians work with the public to provide excellent library services at Mount Vernon City Library.

Under general supervision, the Supervising Librarian oversees all operational activities, services, and staff performance to include hiring, supervising, evaluating, and training. Provides general assistance to all Library patrons.
Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides reference assistance and advanced reader's advisory to Library patrons both in person and via phone and email; assists patrons with using library technology, locating materials, conducting research, accessing accounts, and checking in and out materials.
  • Develops and maintains assigned materials collections; weeds collection materials and evaluates donations; researches book reviews and patron requests; orders new materials; catalogs materials for checkout.
  • Serves on Library management team; assists with resolving staff and patron issues, complaints, and conflicts; enforces Library policies.
  • Plans, prepares, schedules, and presents assigned programs; evaluates programs and activities and makes adjustments as needed; with a focus on STEAM, early literacy and family connections.
  • Creates marketing and promotional materials for assigned programs; updates the Library website with program information; suggests materials for social media posts.
  • Manages assigned program budget and materials; orders print materials, program and operating supplies, and furniture.
  • Onboards, trains and manages assigned Library staff and volunteers.
  • Participates in staff and professional development via meetings, workshops, training programs, and conferences.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Preference may be given to bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish/English.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Master's Degree in Library and Information Science AND three (3) years of progressively responsible library related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Supervisory principles and practices.

  • Dewey Decimal system and diverse collection development.

  • Identifying and researching customer needs.
  • Researching, planning, coordinating, and evaluating programming, services, and events.
  • Maintaining accurate records and filing systems.
  • Providing effective supervision, leadership, and direction to assigned staff.
  • Monitoring and implementing programs and services within budgetary constraints.
  • Researching and developing an assigned library collection.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Organizing and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Completing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Preparing clear and concise communications, reports, and technical documents.
  • Analyzing complex issues and implementing appropriate responses.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
