Summary
Under general supervision of the Network and Systems Analyst, the Systems Administrator is responsible for ensuring that all the City of Mount Vernon's servers, databases and backup infrastructure are up to date and functioning as expected. The position plans and implements upgrades, security patches and other related duties in the areas of servers and database management and analytics. The position also assists in compiling and presenting city data for use by departments in decision making.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Installs, configures, and administers the City's servers; maintains and oversees all City backups and disaster plans for recovery.
  • Develops maintenance schedules and determines equipment required; plans within the budget for servers, networking, and security.
  • Maintains, updates, and safeguards server software applications, throughout the City; ensures compliance with applicable software laws.
  • Installs, upgrades, and maintains servers; installs, upgrades, and troubleshoots server components.
  • Provides preventative maintenance and operational support to servers, and related system peripherals.
  • Builds and maintains city databases.
  • Compiles and presents city data using software-based analytics (Power Bi, Power Automate, Tableau)
  • Works with departments in compiling and presenting data analytics so that it can be used in making information-based decisions.
  • Protects City data using data security best practices.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Associate's degree in Information Systems or related field AND two (2) years of IT support and administration related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:

  • All areas of Information system technologies and security practices.
  • Advanced server management methods and processes.
  • Microsoft and Linux operating systems
  • VMWare Platform
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
  • Customer service principles, practices, and etiquette.
  • Records maintenance and retention policies and procedures.
  • Materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in the work of server and data management.

Skill in:

  • Coordinating integration of new server systems into existing systems and networks.
  • Interpreting data analytics and presenting data in a manner that it can be used in decision making.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Organizing and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Analyzing complex issues and implementing appropriate responses.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

License and Certification Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Washington state driver's license.
  • Current Data Analytics or Database Management certifications are highly desirable.
  • Current Microsoft Server certifications is highly desirable.
