The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department is seeking highly motivated people devoted to public service to join our team in providing exceptional service to the citizens of Tacoma.

Under the direction of the Environmental Services Assistant Director, the Communication and Marketing Analyst will be responsible for managing the Environmental Services internal and external websites, social media channels, and digital identity. This position will also work closely with other members of the Communication and Engagement Team to develop and implement strategic communication plans that effectively promote the department's mission and programs to the public.

Essential Duties

  • Serve as primary web steward for all Environmental Services internal and external websites to ensure that content is up-to-date, accurate, engaging, and relevant to ES utility customers and Tacoma community members.
  • Serve as primary administrator for all Environmental Services social media accounts to ensure that content is engaging, timely, and consistent with other departmental priorities and messages.
  • Develop comprehensive social media strategies to enhance the department's online presence and to engage with the public effectively.
  • Serve as primary web steward for internal Environmental Services intranet (SharePoint) pages to ensure that content is up-to-date, accurate, engaging, and relevant to all City of Tacoma and ES staff.
  • Create simple graphic elements for web and social media, and work with the Media and Communication Office graphic design team to have graphics created for digital use.
  • Work with other member of the ES Communication and Engagement team and Media and Communication Office to support the creation and maintenance of a consistent brand image for ES (including logos, templates, typography, color palettes, etc.)
  • Work with other members of the Communication and Engagement and Language Access teams to identify opportunities to develop and improve language access and translation strategies across digital platforms.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, marketing or directly related field

Minimum Experience*
2 years of public information, community engagement/outreach and/or marketing experience.

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION):

  • Two (2) or more years' experience in managing and creating content for websites and social media.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field*.

  • Depending upon assignment a WA driver's license may be required.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with web content management systems and social media management tools.
  • Basic graphic design skills and experience creating graphics for web and social media.
  • Basic skills with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Knowledge of and interest in environmental issues and sustainability.
  • Principles and practices of community and media relations.
  • Methods, principles, and practices of preparing and presenting public information materials.
  • Basic research methods.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Develop advertising and marketing programs and strategies.
  • Translate technical information and present in understandable terms.
  • Read, interpret, apply, and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Plan and organize work.
