Position Description

The City of Tacoma is establishing a civil service list for Carpenter, Crew Leader to coordinate, monitor and participate in rough and finish carpentry duties necessary in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and other structures; provide training and work direction to carpenters and other workers assigned to the work site.

This is skilled carpentry work involving rough and finish carpentry necessary in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings and other structures. Position normally works repairing and maintaining doors, floors, windows, partitions, bridges, bed beams and small parts of buildings; forming and pouring concrete; participate in the setting and installation of fences, gates, sidewalks, curbs, vaults, manholes, drains, and foundations for towers and other equipment; repairing building and maintaining tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters, and other wood equipment; installing hardware on doors, windows and related wood parts; grading lumber to determine economically appropriate material for jobs; participating in excavation and placement of reinforcing steel and anchor bolts.

Work includes indoor and outdoor assignments; subject to noise. Position requires lifting, pushing, climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds.
Employees in this position may be exposed to potentially hazardous materials.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate, monitor and participate in the repair and maintenance of doors, floors, windows, small parts of buildings, bridges, tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, counters and other wood equipment.
  • Coordinate and monitor the setting and installation of fences, gates, sidewalks, curbs, vaults, drains and foundations for towers and other electrical equipment.
  • Build cabinets, shelves, drawers, closets, screens and screen doors, map boards, shipping crates and other related wood parts; install hardware on doors, windows and related wood parts; grade lumber to determine economically appropriate material for job.
  • Direct the excavation, forming and pouring of concrete, placing of reinforcing steel and anchor bolts; direct other work related to building construction as required.
  • Provide training and work direction to carpenters and other workers assigned to a crew.
  • Discuss and evaluate the work performance of assigned crew members, including the completion of performance appraisals.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches of construction and repair projects; work from sketches, drawings or blueprints; estimate costs; and secure materials as needed.
  • Provide assistance in performing plumbing, heating, electrical and painting duties as required.
  • Maintain hand and power tools and equipment to assure proper and safe operating conditions.
  • Prepare various daily records, including material lists.
  • Operate a variety of tools, machinery and equipment such as saws, drills, trowels, sanders, routers, levels, and other hand and power tools; operate a City vehicle, including flatbed truck and forklift.
  • Observe and implement proper safety practices.
  • Identify, evaluate, estimate, schedule, monitor and manage computerized project management/work order system.
  • Work safely and cooperatively with co-workers and the public.

Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and seven years of full-time paid employment as a journey level carpenter to include three years experience as a carpenter crew leader or foreman, or any equivalent combination of education and experience totaling a minimum of seven years that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of this position.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State driver's license, valid first aid card with CPR and forklift training by the end of the probationary period and maintenance thereafter.

Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks which may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.

Selection Process & Supplemental Information
You must apply online and meet the minimum qualifications to progress in the examination process.

Applicants who qualify for veteran's scoring criteria must attach a copy of their DD214, Member 4 copy, at the time of application.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the supplemental questions scored by an evaluation committee. Each applicant will be scored on the basis of information provided. It is the responsibility of the applicant to describe all relevant experience and training. Applicants must pass the examination process to be placed on the eligible list for interview and hiring consideration.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical exam and drug screen. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between The City of Tacoma and Local 17. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
